An Express Train in the State of Assam mowed down 5 Asian Wild Elephants including a Pregnant One in the early hours of Sunday, December 10, 2017.
This happened when a Herd of 30 Elephants were attempting to cross the Railway Tracks in Sonitpur District of Assam.
Today, as never before there is an urgent need to recognize the importance of creating "Safe Wildlife Corridors" in every State of India so as to facilitate the migration of wildlife specially migrating wild elephants in broken habitats which will also help in preserving Bio Diversity.
Wherever Railways fragment Wildlife Habitats throughout India, Underpasses and Overpasses must be built as soon as possible to preserve the traditional movement of wildlife.
It has been observed that Railways are sources of mortality for all kinds of wildlife but specially for Migrating Wild Elephant Herds in North East India.
Since, India is blessed by God with an abundance of wildlife unparalleled anywhere in the world I believe it is necessary to preserve, improve, interconnect, and enlarge habitats for wildlife before it is too late.
I say too late simply because of the rising number of wildlife being recklessly killed in accidents all across India with every passing year.
Creation Of Elephant Corridors or Elephant Crossings in and around Railway Tracks that cut across Reserved Forests and Wildlife Sanctuaries is The Need of The Hour.
